FNESC is working to make systemic shifts in public education to support successful educational outcomes and attendance for all First Nation students, regardless of where they live or are enrolled in school in BC.

FNESC works closely with the Ministry of Education and Child Care and other K-12 sector partners to improve policy and programs in support of First Nations learners, families, and communities.

Highlighted Initiatives

Local Education Agreements

Local Education Agreements (LEAs) are an important mechanism to increase accountability and to promote and achieve effective working relationships between First Nations and Boards of Education, enabling them to work collaboratively to support First Nation students.

Indigenous Education Councils

Indigenous Education Councils advise Boards of Education on programs and services for Indigenous students and on the integration of Indigenous world views and perspectives, in particular those of First Nations in whose territory Boards of Education operate.

Indigenous Focused Non-Instructional Day

As committed to in the BC Tripartite Education Agreement (2018) and set out in section 8 of the BC School Calendar Regulation, Boards of Education must schedule at least one Indigenous-focused non-instructional day each school year.

FNESC/FNSA Teacher Resource Guides

With the increased inclusion of First Peoples’ content in the BC curriculum, there is greater need to incorporate unappropriated First Peoples’ perspectives into classrooms.
