Public K-12 Education

FNESC engages in advocacy for the benefit of all First Nations students attending BC public K-12 schools.

The work of FNESC includes supporting systemic changes to public education, including legislative, policy, and practices reforms, to improve the outcomes, experience, and attendance of First Nation learners in the BC public K-12 education system.

Indigenous Education Councils

Indigenous Education Councils advise Boards of Education on programs and services for Indigenous students and on the integration of Indigenous world views and perspectives, in particular those of First Nations in whose territory Boards of Education operate schools.

Local Education Agreements

Local Education Agreements can support accountability and effective working relationships between a First Nation and a Board of Education or between a First Nation and an independent school authority.

Children & Youth in Care

First Nations children and youth in the care system, and those that were formally in the care system deserve to receive consistent and effective support at school so they have every opportunity possible for educational and lifelong success

Indigenous-Focused Non-Instructional Day

Each year, teachers in British Columbia have one non-instructional day focused on enhancing First Nation student learning outcomes.

Nominal Roll and Joint Verification Process

The Nominal Roll is the registry of all eligible elementary and secondary students federally funded to attend a First Nation, public, or independent  school. It serves as an annual student census which is used to calculate education funding for students ordinarily living on reserve.
