By working together, sharing our experiences and ideas, and speaking with a united voice, First Nations in BC have made significant advances in First Nations education.

FNESC has a mandate to support First Nations in their efforts to improve the success of all First Nations students and advance First Nations education in BC by disseminating information, undertaking research, administering programs and services, and advocating and negotiating with the provincial and federal governments and other key stakeholders at the direction of First Nations.

Key Advancements

Some of FNESC’s key advancements include the First Nations education jurisdiction initiative, the BC Tripartite Education Agreement, amendments to the BC School Act, the Indigenous-focused graduation requirement, and the First Nations Mandated Institutes Act.

Language and Culture

First Nations languages and cultures are central to First Nations’ distinctive laws, traditions, and ways of life, and First Nations’ connections to their lands are embedded in their languages.

FNESC is committed to supporting the important work of First Nation schools in British Columbia.

Public K-12 Education

At the direction of First Nations, FNESC engages in provincial advocacy to improve the outcomes and attendance of First Nations students attending BC public schools.

Post-Secondary Education

FNESC is committed to ensuring that First Nations students have access to relevant, high-quality education at all levels, including post-secondary.

First Nations Parents Club

Parents and families play a key role in the education of their children. First Nations parents and guardians have a right to be involved in all decisions about their children’s education.
